WHAT CAN I TOW?
Once of the first things to consider, when thinking about entering the world of caravanning, is wether your car is
capable of towing. It can be the difference between upgrading the car or using your existing motor. There are
many resources to check our your car’s towing capability. Tow weights can be found in the owner’s handbook
or on the car’s data plate. You can also find from resources on the web. The WHAT TOWCAR website has
information on every car model.

If your car is not capable of towing a lot, there are many cars out there that are up to the job.

THE 85% PRINCIPLE
There is a simple calculation that can be made to check if your car is suitable of towing a specific caravan.
Once you have the towing capability of your vehicle, find out the weight of the caravan you are considering.
You can find this out by the MTPLM (Maximum Technical Permissable Laden Mass) of the caravan.
Car manufacturers specify a towing limit which MUST NOT BE EXCEEDED.
Now just divide the caravan weight by the the car’s and if the figure is 85% or less then the outfit should be
completely safe to use in most circumstances.

The 85% figure is only a recommendation and not a legal requirement. If you have towed before you can go
to the maximum limit but MUST NOT EXCEED THIS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
